Review: Darker Days by Jus Accardo

 Darker Days by Jus Accardo
Published Date: August 2013
Publisher: Entangled Publishing
Genre: YA Paranormal

The Story: Jessie Darker goes to high school during the day, but at night she helps with the family investigation business. Cheating husbands and stolen inheritances? They’re your girls—but their specialty is a bit darker. Zombie in your garage? Pesky Poltergeist living in your pool? They’ll have the problem solved in a magical minute. For a nominal fee, of course...

When gorgeous new client, Lukas Scott, saunters into the office requesting their help to find a stolen box, it sounds like a simple case—until the truth comes out. The box is full of Sin.

Seven deadly ones, in fact.

They’ve got five days to recapture the Sins before they're recalled by the box, taking seven hijacked human bodies with them. Easy peasy—except for one thing...

There’s a spell that will allow the Sins to remain free, causing chaos forever. When the key ingredient threatens the life of someone she knows, Jessie must make the ultimate choice between love and family—or lose everything.

My Review: This book is so cute!  I loved every bit of it.  Jus Accardo has taken bounty hunting to a different level.  Jessie Darker – the main character, is a fun, stubborn gal that a lot of us can probably relate to.  Then she and her mom have to battle to get all the 7 deadly sins, back into a box to be locked forever.  Only, Jessie fell in love with one guy who has been trapped with the sins.

This story isn’t believeable – I mean come on, wouldn’t happen in real life!  But that’s the best part about stories, we can be immersed in different worlds!  Jus Accardo has given us a world, a place, where our nightmares are real, where good always has to battle evil, and where love can cause you to do weird things!  Definitely a good read!!!

But Aspen reminds him of the rebellious life he used to live and is making it difficult to resist sinful temptations. Though Dante is committed to living clean for his girlfriend Charlie, this dude’s been a playboy for far too long…and old demons die hard.

With Charlie becoming the girl she was never able to be pre-makeover and Aspen showing him how delicious it feels to embrace his inner beast, Dante will have to go somewhere he never thought he’d return to in order to accomplish the impossible: save the girl he’s been assigned to, and keep the girl he loves.

But when she proves to have a particular skill at harnessing the relics’ powers, Maggie is whisked away to the glamorous hacienda of Álvar Castilla, the wealthy young relic baron who runs Burning Mesa. Allie Munroe has only ever wanted to belong, maybe even be well liked. But even though she’s nice and smart and has a couple of friends, she’s still pretty much the invisible girl at school. So when the chance to work with her friends and some of the popular kids on an English project comes up, Allie jumps at the chance to be noticed.

And her plan would have worked out just fine…if they hadn’t been sucked into a magical realm through a dusty old book of fairy tales in the middle of the library.

Now, Allie and her classmates are stuck in Nerissette, a world where karma rules and your social status is determined by what you deserve. Which makes a misfit like Allie the Crown Princess, and her archrival the scullery maid. And the only way out is for Allie to rally and lead the people of Nerissette against the evil forces that threaten their very existence.

Nothing can stop Raine Cooper when she wants something…

Raine finally knows that her gorgeous neighbor, Torin St. James, is a legend straight out of Norse mythology, and that her feelings for him are strong. Torin is crazy about Raine too, breaking the one rule he lives by: Never fall for a mortal. The problem is he no longer remembers her, his memories erased by Norns—Norse destiny deities—to punish her for defying them.

She will make Torin forget his one rule a second time and fall in love with her all over again.

But she quickly learns that well-laid plans do not work when dealing with deities and supernatural beings. Desperate, Raine makes choices that could not only tear her and Torin further apart, but lead to the destruction of everything and everyone she loves.

EXCERPT

His attitude stank, even though I knew about his loneliness. I was meant to take it away, complete him. The thought fueled my anger. Before I realized my intention, I poked him in the chest. “It’s only crappy because you are too pig-headed to change. You choose to be alone when you don’t have to be. You had a chance to make me immortal, and you took the moral high ground.”

He grabbed my finger. “I’d never knowingly sentence a Mortal to this life, not even one as lovely as you.”

That hurt. I yanked my finger from his grip. “I wouldn’t want you to if you got down on your knees and begged.”

Blue flames leapt in his eyes, which moved to my lips before locking with mine. “I don’t beg, Freckles.”

“You lost the right to call me that, Valkyrie. And FYI, if I wanted to, I could make you beg.”

He leaned closer, making me catch my breath. He smirked at my reaction. “I could turn the tables on you like that, Freckles.” He snapped his fingers.

I cocked my head. “Oh, is that supposed to scare me?”

“It should. In fact, get your lovely ass back in your car and drive as far away from me as possible.”

I swallowed, feeling reckless. “I’m not afraid of you, Torin St. James.”

He leaned even closer, his breath fanning my face. Memories of our kisses mocked me. I wanted to reach up, grab his face, and force him to remember, make him tremble and breathless.

“Just because I don’t like emotional nightmares with snarky little Mortal girls doesn’t mean I can’t take what I want when I want it and move on without losing sleep over it.”

Thoughts of kissing him disappeared from my head. Snarky little Mortal girls? I wanted to smack him. “You’re a jackass.”

He laughed. “Now we’re getting somewhere.”

“I loathe you.”

“That’s even better. Don’t forget it when you come to my house for lessons,” he added and flashed that smile I’d once thought was sexy, but now made me want to kick him. “I’ll try to make myself scarce, but I’m not promising anything. So try to keep the snarky comments to a minimum. As for the girlish crush you think you have on me, it will pass. They always do.”

“It already did at ‘misunderstood’,” I shot back, getting behind the wheel and slamming the car door. He was the most annoying, shits-for-brains guy I’d ever met. Girlish crush? That was the last straw.

REVIEW

I loved reading more about Torin St James and Raine.  Raine is fighting for Torin, for him to remember their love.  But the Norns have other ideas.

Ednah Walters puts so much into her books.  It leaves you with a feeling of wanting more!  If you enjoyed reading Runes, then you have to continue on with the series!  There's so much love, hate and revenge going on.  And there's a lot that will throw you for a loop.  I had to re-read Immortals, becuase I thought I had missed something!  And then ending, wow, can't tell you how awesome that was!

Review: Emblazoned Red by Dawn McCullough White

Emblazoned Red by Dawn McCullough White
Published Date: May 2013
Publisher: Claypipe Press
Genre: YA

The Story:
Once, in another world—a dark world, the world of Faetta—there lived paladins and pirates, tyrants and scallywags, vampires and the undead. In this world a revolution is brewing. The royalty of Sieunes are in chains, and those priests and paladins who follow the holy word of the gods are under attack. In the west, the kingdom of Kellerhald receives the fleeing priests in their temples of the paladins of Silvius, god of the Sky.

Here, a young woman has just passed her tests to become a paladin. A pirate crew raids along the Azez Sea. An undead creature, wielding great power, roams the graveyard of Yetta. And a lost soul, crying out from beyond the veil, seeks out a pure hearted warrior to hear its plea.

Amid the turmoil of the revolution, Ilka’s mettle is tested. Rescued by pirates, she ends up with an unlikely ally: the pirate captain himself. The newly trained paladin finds herself collaborating with the undead, working with a vampire, and worst of all, longing for revenge against the man who has ignited the revolution in Sieunes: Francois Mond.

Death of an Innocent. Rise of a Paladin.

My Review: This book sounded very neat and interesting.  While reading it though, it was scattered. We were introduced to a lot of characters, and different stories, without a lot of background.  When the book ended, it was like "ok, now what just happened?"  The pretense of this book is good, but the story needed more editing and filling out.  It's part of a series, so I hope the next book explains more.

Character Interview & Giveaway: Essence by Mandi Lynn

Essence by Mandi Lynn
Published Date: July 2013
Publisher: Self
Genre: YA

The Story: It starts with a shift in the atmosphere. The forest greets Emma with startling force. At first she can’t move her limbs. Then her vision is rendered useless. The sensation comes more often, and the symptoms become frightening as Emma is left paralyzed to the force that emerges from the forest. Voices come in dream at first, commanding against her will. Something is out there that calls Emma to the forest. It isn’t going to fade until she surrenders.

Character Interview:

Emma has agreed to give us an interview!!!

What is one food you would never eat?

I would never eat something slimy like clams. I’m more than happy to go ahead, get down and dirty, and camp in a tent for a week, but something about the texture of clams…

Where is one place you'd rather live?

I just moved next to the White Mountains National and as breath-taking as the views are, I miss the beaches of Florida where I grew up. The sounds of the ocean waves have always been home to me.

What's the best advice someone has given you?

My mom once told me to never forget family and I didn’t think that was even possible. It isn’t until your life is turned upside down that you realize how easily the ones you love can slip out of your grasp.

Have you made Mandi's life more difficult or less?

I would like to think I’ve made her life easier, but in reality I think the opposite is true. She’s agonized over my story day after day, but I think she is happy to write ‘The End’ on the last page of my story and be pleased with the results.

What's the best and worst part about living next to a National Park?

The best part is the view. My backyard is a postcard! But when you live next to such a lush forest you also come across the animals that inhabit it. Every now and then we see bears, deer, and moose. The first few months we lived here we were alarmed by how close they came to our house, but now we welcome the stray animals, always keeping the camera near buy for a photo.

Damsel Distressed Cover contest

Kelsey Macke’s DAMSEL DISTRESSED Cover Design Contest

Kelsey Macke’s DAMSEL DISTRESSED (Spencer Hill Contemporary, 2014) is the story of Imogen Keegan, a seventeen-year old girl who has been stuck in a cycle of clinical depression, self-harm, and baked-goods-addiction since her mom died seven years ago.

The book, DAMSEL DISTRESSED, is equal parts hurt and heart, and is held together by Imogen’s journal entries of poems, doodles, lyrics, and the “back stage” musings of a theatre-loving girl who is so much more than the sum of her parts.

Imogen’s journal is part of the prose, but the line between fiction and reality blurs when readers have the ability to use their computer or mobile device to access all kinds of interactive online content.

The cornerstone of this supplemental content is the album of real life songs, written and performed by the author as part of the band, Wedding Day Rain called IMOGEN UNLOCKED.

The inside of the book is highly interactive and driven by the readers’ experience.

The creative team wants nothing less for the outside of the book as well!

So, in the spirit of community and collaboration, we’re having a cover contest!

The DAMSEL DISTRESSED cover contest will be open from August 16th until September 22nd, 2014.

We’re so excited to see all of the incredible ideas you have that will tap into Imogen’s story.

There will be three rounds, each narrowing the entries, and culminating in a public vote for one of three top slots! Additionally, ten semi-finalists will win a $10 itunes gift card and a $10 Barnes and Noble gift card. The grand prize winner will not only earn the design commission and a copy of the book once printed, but will also have the opportunity to design the album artwork and swag!

If you or someone you know is eager to dive into the world of publishing design, this is a great opportunity to grow a portfolio and get paid!

For full details on the contest, including all terms, conditions, and instructions for submitting your design, visit www.damseldistressed.com!

"Fun, romantic and giddy, Camp Boyfriend brings real romance to summer camp with grace, humor and passion." - Carrie Jones, New York Times Best-selling Author of the NEED series

Excerpt #4:
“Can I ask you a question?” I’d been dying to ask him this for years, but the old me had been too afraid.
“Shoot.” He wrapped his arms around his knees and locked a hand around his other wrist.
I gathered my courage. “Why did you want to break up every year after camp?”
In the quiet that followed, I traced the white stitching on the embroidery that outlined Madison’s initial.
When Seth finally answered, his voice was low.
“It’s easier to end things on good terms than risk something going wrong during the school year.”
“Why assume the worst?” I’d never given him reason to doubt me.
“I saw what my dad went through after my mom left us.” He reached for a stick to shove the logs around in the dusty fireplace as I marveled that he’d finally admitted what I’d suspected.  When Seth’s mom abandoned him, she’d left a huge hole. No wonder he had trust issues. Still, we could have worked through that if he’d given me a chance. Opened up to me like this before.
“I always figured I’d wait to get serious with anyone until I was… really sure,” he continued.
“And you were never sure of me?”
His crooked grin made a surprise appearance, but his tone was dry. “I was hoping this would be the year we’d be ready to take that step.”
Something inside me collapsed. My chest felt so tight that for a minute I couldn’t breathe. We’d been so close to developing something amazing.
“Instead, I showed up with someone else.”
Outside, the wind rubbed tree limbs against the cabin, making a squeaking scrape.
“It wasn’t just that.” He put the stick down and looked at me. Really looked me. “You showed up as someone else. Someone I didn’t recognize with a new look, clothes, interests.”
I opened my mouth to protest but stayed silent when I followed his gaze to my trendy sneakers.
“I didn’t know who you were anymore,” Seth went on. “Since when did you prefer dancing to stargazing, tanning to pursuing your Aerospace Scholar dreams? That wasn’t the Lauren I knew. Loved.”
I flinched. Who knew a verb tense could cut as deep as a knife? Seth no longer loved me because I’d changed.
How ironic that I’d come back to camp to get back to the things I’d loved, especially Seth. But Matt had stopped that chance and, suddenly, I was glad he had. What was so wrong with liking dance and astronomy? Cheering and the science club? The popular and the outsider cliques? The problem was, I hadn’t realized I could do both, be both. If I’d gone back to Seth, I would never have learned that.
I looked over at my drying wedge sandals by the fireplace. They were awesome, even if they had slowed us down. And yeah, I was the girl who worried about weather-induced hair frizz.
So maybe I had changed. And Seth had a point about letting my dreams lapse. But why couldn’t he see through the make-up and clothes to the person who still thrilled at the site of a meteor shower and drew constellations on her notebook covers?
I laid back, tired of justifying myself. “That girl’s gone, Seth. I’m different now.”
Seth stretched beside me. His amber eyes searched mine in the shadows between us, a wistful smile lifting the corners of his mouth.
“It’s not a bad thing,” he agreed, his fingers toying with my curls. “I just miss the old you sometimes.”
I closed my eyes and enjoyed his touch, knowing it wasn’t going any further. After all, he cared about someone else, someone I’d never be again.
“Sometimes…” I edged a little closer to ease the empty ache inside. “…so do I.”
