Character Interview & Review: Body & Blood by Amanda Havard

Body & Blood by Amanda Havard
Publisher: Chafie Press
Published Date: July 2013
Genre: YA Paranormal

The Story: How many answers you seek are just a part of you, waiting to be found?

The game has changed.

Fresh from her first brush with mortality, a fragile Sadie Matthau is playing human with Cole Hardwick while the Survivors endure unimaginable tragedy. Wrought with the first deaths of their own kind, a tyrant who will torture them, and an opponent more terrifying than anyone could have foreseen, the Survivors are facing their end.

Told from three points of view, The Survivors: Body & Blood is a bloodcurdling, mind-bending, heart-stopping ride. As Sadie and the Winters uncover more enemies, more history, and more answers, they find themselves brought closer together and ripped further apart. And all the while, a haunting Alexander Raven lurks at the edge of Sadie s lifeline, at the darkening fringes of her mind.

As the Survivors descend into chaos, Sadie realizes a painful truth: the deepest of secrets leave the darkest of marks.

Caught between a terrifying fantasy and her own grim reality, Body & Blood is the story of Sadie's dance with her demons, future, past, and present.

My Review: I love paranormal!!  Body & Blood is the third book in The Survivors series.  The first book Survivor starts us off during the Salem Witch trials, and shows a much darker side to it.  26 children exiled in the west, only 14 survive.  Those 14 call themselves survivors and work on creating families.   Then comes Sadie, one survivor who isn't content with staying at the city.  During Point of Origin she learns about where the survivors came from, and other supernatural beings.

Now in Body & Blood,  all supernatural beings must fight to survive.  Sadie has learned the truth behind her origins, and still desperately wants to be just human.  I love watching the emotions each character has, and their interactions with each other.  We see good and bad, and hope so much that the good really does win out.  There's so much going on in this book, and when it ends, oh man, I was wishing book four was out.  I know there has to be a book 4, because there's no way Amanda Havard would end the series with us hanging on, wondering what's going to happen to Sadie, Everett, Cole and the other characters we've grown to love, or hate (as in Alexander Raven, and John's case.)

If you're looking for something different in the paranormal world, pick up The Survivors series!

Character Interview with Sadie:

If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?

Karl Lagerfeld
Abigail Williams — yes, from Salem (careful tie with her or Samuel Parris)
Alexander McQueen
My mother and father

That might be an awkward mix. Alexander (well, Lee, as they called him) and Karl might be one good dinner, and the other three might be another. I never was good at knowing who to pair with whom for the most effective social outcome.

If you were a superhero what would your name be?

I do have a lot of powers, but I suppose I never think of myself in superhero speak (the way, say, Mark and Ginny think of themselves). I’d say Femme Fatale or something like that because I find a way to cause our particular brand of trouble in the highest heels. Then again, I spend my time with Ginny, who is the Femme Fatale to rule them all. I’m rambling now. (I do that when nervous.) Maybe we’ll just say “Witchy Woman” because that’s Ginny’s favorite thing to call me these days. (Raven hair and ruby lips, sparks fly from her fingertips? Anyone?)

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your story.

I suppose I can’t tell you why in one sentence (I tried many, many times just now), but I can tell you what it is:

The circumstance is supernatural, but the heartbreak is human.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?

There is, I suppose, some irony to the fact that I could live anywhere, and yet I live nowhere. I like to think, when I settle down, it will be on a beach somewhere. Secluded. Warm water. And yet that idea seems to be getting all the more distant.

Do you have conversations with Amanda - you know, to make sure she's writing your story right?!

Of course I do. But you don’t have to worry too much about Amanda. For one, she’ll always tell things in great enough detail that I can’t fault her for leaving something out. And to those of you who hear my story, well, she’ll tell you honestly what’s happening in my head, in my actions. I sometimes wish she’d blur the edges of my rougher choices to flatter me, I suppose, but then again if she did that, you wouldn’t have the story you have in front of you. But of course we talk. How else would I let her so deeply inside the darkest corners of my heart, my mind?

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

Everett always points out I’m quieter than you expect me to be. I spend so much time watching, thinking, that I sometimes forget to say anything at all. I think it unnerves people, but I’m not sure how to change it.

Review: Born of Lies by Sara Dailey and Staci Weber

Born of Lies by Sara Dailey & Staci Weber
Published Date: July 2013
Publisher: Boroughs Publishing Group
Genre: YA

The Story:  The world changed for Lillian Michaels the day Marcus chose her. Gorgeous, strong fierce…and soon he would be alpha of her werewolf pack. But then the marriage was set. No choice. No looking back. Except, she did. Lillian started looking forward, too, and wondering if eighteen was too young to give away her life.

Certainly, it is tonight. A rock concert. She and her friend, intoxicating music, sweat, bodies, freedom…and him: Paul. The human bassist’s touch makes her soul sing like the strings of his axe, and everything is possible. Yet, Lillian’s parents, her secrets, her entire world lies elsewhere. Paul doesn’t even see what she is, what she can do. What she must do. This to-die-for human is not of her kind. And yet, something special, something terrifyingly perfect, something eternally true has been…born of lies.

My Review:  This book was just as awesome as the first two!  Only this time, we see why Lillian Michaels left her pack and married Paul.  We find out what she would do for family and for the right to choose.

Sara Dailey and Staci Weber don't disappoint in this book.  There's just as much going on, as there was in the first two books.  Though it seems like this is a prequel, it's not.  You will spoil much if you read Born of Lies before Pack of Lies and Circle of Lies.  And if you have read the first two books, well, then you MUST pick up Born of Lies to continue the story!

Cover Reveal - GIDEON'S SPEAR by Darby Karchut

GIDEON'S SPEAR
The sequel to FINN FINNEGAN
By Darby Karchut
Gideon’s Spear
(The Adventures of Finn MacCullen #2)
For Finn MacCullen, it’s time to Irish up.
With a shout, Finn held the spear aloft. “Come along, ye manky beasties,” he yelled, throwing every bit of Gideon-ness he could into his voice. “I’ve a wee point to share with ye!” Gripping the end of the shaft in both hands, he swung it around and around over his head, creating a whistling sound. “Faugh a ballagh!”
“The Spear!” Goblin voices screeched in panic. “The Spear of the Tuatha De Danaan!”
“Yeah, you got that right!” Finn yelled back.
When a power-crazed sorceress and the neighborhood pack of beast-like goblins team up and threaten both his master and his friends, thirteen-year-old Finn (not Finnegan) MacCullen does the only thing an apprentice monster hunter can do: he takes the fight to the enemy.
And woe to the foe he meets along the way.

Review: Awoken by Timothy Miller

Awoken by Timothy Miller
Published Date: August 2013
Publisher: Spencer Hill Press
Genre: YA

The Story: Fourteen-year-old Michael Stevens has never been ordinary; no orphan who hears music coming from rocks considers himself a typical teenager. But life gets a lot more complicated when two-foot-tall, albino, doll-like men sneak into his room one night, transforming the harmless music into a frightening ability he cannot control.

Soon, strangers in black suits begin to ask unsettling questions while unnatural animals with mismatched eyes haunt the streets. They are hunting, and not just Michael: anyone he cares about is in danger.

With the help of a mysterious drifter, an annoying girl he's accidentally mutated, and one of those creepy doll men, Michael finds himself in the middle of a war that could forever change the world he knows - reconstructing the very definition of humanity.

My Review: This was a cute book!  The first thing that drew me into it, was the music coming from the rocks!  I LOVE rocks, and so this story intrigued me.

While reading Awoken, I realized that this world was unlike any I've read before.  Timothy Miller has presented a world where there's freaky albino people, crows and cats who pay way to much attention to each other and rocks under-go crazy transformations.  It was great seeing how a kid who moved from foster home to foster home, found those he considered family.  Found strength in himself, and learned to trust people.

Blog Tour: Frigid by J Lynn

Frigid by Jennifer Armentrout
Published Date: July 2013
Publisher: Spencer Hill Contemporary
Genre: New Adult

The Story:
For twenty-one-year-old Sydney, being in love with Kyler isn't anything new. They'd been best friends ever since he pushed her down on the playground and she made him eat a mud pie. Somewhere over the years, she fell for him and fell hard. The big problem with that? Kyler puts the 'man' in man-whore. He's never stayed with a girl longer than a few nights, and with it being their last year in college, Syd doesn't want to risk their friendship by declaring her love.

Kyler has always put Syd on a pedestal that was too high for him to reach. To him, she's perfect and she's everything. But the feelings he has for her, he's always hidden away or focused on any other female. After all, Kyler will always be the poor boy from the wrong side of tracks, and Syd will always be the one girl he can never have.

But when they're stranded together at a posh ski resort due to a massive Nor'easter, there's nothing stopping their red-hot feelings for each other from coming to the surface. Can their friendship survive the attraction? Better yet, can they survive at all? Because as the snow falls, someone is stalking them, and this ski trip may be a life-changer in more ways than one.

My Review: Holy Crap!  Best book to read while it's scorching hot outside!  But then again, you won't notice anything when you're reading Frigid!  Kyler is just perfect, though he doesn't seem to think he's perfect enough for Sydney.  And Sydney has had the biggest crush on Kyler since they were little.  Not to mention that EVERY one of their friends know that they like each other!

But this isn't a fairy tale, where they have a romantic week being snowed in.  Jennifer Armentrout (J Lynn) has written a story where you're not sure if love can conquer all.  With the person stalking them, the power going out, it just spells trouble for these two.  But boy, you're rooting for Kyler and Syd the whole time.  Sometimes you're even yelling at them to get their act together!

Want to know what happens?  Pick up a copy and read it for yourself! ;)

Kyler's Interview Question #10

10. Tell us something about you that we don’t learn in the book? You probably want to know something a little sexier, but the reason that I learned how to play the guitar was because when we were younger Sydney mentioned that she thought guys who played the guitar were hot. She would watch guys play the guitar and practically drool all over them. I hated it. So, as much as I love to play now, I really owe it all to Sydney because I only started taking lessons to impress her. Although I would never admit that to her.

11. If I were to give you a pet tiger, what would you name him and why? (And yes the tiger would definitely be a HIM and he is exceedingly adorable, but in a vicious way.)

Question 11 will be answered on Just a Book Lover 7/24

At first it was hard to understand what was happening, because you felt like you were part of the travel along with Arizona Stevens.  It's not til later in the book, when things start making sense, and you see the whole picture of what's happening.  This is a good read!  And if you love time travels, traveling to alternate dimensions, then you'll want to pick up this book!

Book Blitz: A Taylor-Made Life by Kary Rader

They lived the life they were given; they loved the life they made.

Cheerleader Taylor Smith doesn’t want to die a virgin. Unfortunately, if the terminally-ill leukemia patient doesn't find a lover or a stem-cell match within months, her fear will become reality. When her cancer mentor is revealed to be a hottie entrepreneur from California, it seems fate might finally be on her side.

Tech-geek Gavin Taylor has everything he ever wanted, except someone to grieve for him when he's gone. With his melanoma cancer beyond the help of his riches, he agrees to participate in a cancer patient mentoring program where he's matched with a dying teen from Texas. Despite his immediate attraction, the Silicon Valley whiz intends only to provide friendship and happy memories to the beautiful, young woman who is determined to win his love.

When it's discovered that his frozen sperm and her harvested eggs could lead to a cure, Taylor's mother offers to be a surrogate. And Gavin must decide if he can risk the heart he has never given and a child he'll never know to a girl he just met.

Excerpt:
My blood rushed hot through my veins like a West Texas brush fire as Gavin pulled into the driveway and parked.

We were perfect together. Couldn’t he see that? When I’d asked about the matchmaker, I thought for sure he would sweep me off my feet and carry me away. He hadn’t.

He turned off the ignition and twisted in his seat to face me. “I had a great time the last three days.”

“Me, too.” I lifted my gaze to look at him, to really look at him. God, he was gorgeous, smart, fun, but also sweet and kind. Panic made me want to latch on to him and not let go. I’d rather get an IV in my eyeball than let him leave. I loved him. I always would.

He stared at back at me, his eyes misting with some emotion I couldn’t name. He was breathing heavily, too heavily. I didn’t move. I knew this game—the first one to blink loses.

Kiss me. Please kiss me.

His hand twitched. My lips parted, and I quietly gasped.

Finally, he closed his eyes, whistled out a long breath, and got out of the car.

Crud!

I wasn’t about to give up yet.

He walked around and opened my door, offering his hand. I clasped it and yanked myself from the seat so quickly that I collided with his chest. He dropped my hand and jumped back like I’d burnt him.

I slapped my palm against my thigh. “What is your problem? Am I so repulsive you can’t stand to accidentally touch me?”

His face paled, and his Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed hard. “No. Of course not. It’s late. I’m sorry.”
It’s late? What kind of lame excuse was that? My shoulders sagged as he swiftly ushered me to the door. I tried to smile hopefully. “You wanna come in?”

He eyed me up and down then shook his head like he was trying to remove a bug clinging to his ear. “I better go. I have an early flight tomorrow.”

“So that’s it, then? You’re just gonna leave?” Everything inside me fell to my toes.

He smiled sympathetically. My hands fisted. Slapping the pacifying expression off his face crossed my mind.

“Hey. It won’t be that bad.” He reached out to brush my arm but let his fingers fall short. “We’ll talk on the phone, and maybe you and your Mom can come for a visit in a few weeks.”

He leaned to kiss my cheek, but I stuck my fingers over his lips. His mouth was soft and warm. Heat spread from my fingers into my arm and through my body. I pulled my hand away so I could concentrate. I was not about to let this end here. “I don’t want a kiss on the cheek, Gavin.”

“I understand.” He held out his hand for me to shake. Captain Oblivious.

I crinkled my nose and frowned. “No. You don’t understand. I want a kiss, but not on the cheek.”

He rubbed a palm across his forehead. “Taylor, we’ve gone over this.”

“No, we haven’t. You’re leaving and—let’s face it—I’ll never see you again. You know it, and I know it.” My voice broke. I stood tall and continued, “You came here to mentor me, take me on a few outings, and give me happy memories. You’ve done that. But I’m asking for one last thing.” I twirled my hair and met his gaze. “I want a real kiss.”

He started shaking his head before I’d even finished. “No.”

Crud-ola! “Why not?”

“Taylor, you know the answer. I told you from the beginning. It’s not appropriate.”

He hadn’t said he didn’t want to. I glared at him and decided to pull out the big guns. “It’s one harmless kiss, Gavin, and it’s a dying girl’s wish.”

His jaw twitched. “That’s not fair, and you know it.”

“Fair? Are we talking about fair now? What’s not fair is that I’ll never get married or have children or even be in love. You’re all I get.” I waved my hand between us. “This is all I get.”

He set his jaw stubbornly, but his eyes betrayed him. “I’ve offered you what I’m willing to give.”

Tears stung my eyes. Damn it. I hated crying, but I couldn’t help it. He’d hit the nail. “You’re no better than those doctors offering me another round of chemo, knowing it won’t do any good and would only make me weaker, sicker.” I crossed my arms over my chest. “Well, I won’t settle for less. I’m settling for too little as it is.”
I swiped at my stupid tears. My pulse pounded. I was fighting with everything I had. “How many women have you been with?”

He squinted in apparent disbelief. “What kind of question is that?”

I stamped my foot. “How many?”

He almost yelled it at me. “A few.”

“Do you remember how it felt to be with them? To love them? Would you trade those memories because a few people said it wasn’t okay?”

He darted his gaze around the front yard, shifting his weight from side to side. Even in the dim light of the porch I could see his mind working through possibilities, making him uncomfortable.

“There’s no one out there in the dark to tell you it’s okay. You have to decide.” I pressed on. “What memory do you want to leave me with? What memory do you want to take? Is it really such a sickening thought? Just one kiss.”

He stared back at me with a wildness that scared me. My heart drummed a xylophone chord across my ribs.

Taylor.…

I locked in on his gaze and stepped toward him. “Tonight you get to decide what you can live with—or without. I’m asking for one moment.”

Stopping inches from him, I absorbed the tension like a thirsty towel. Electric sparks flew between us. The only sounds were our shallow breaths.

Softly, I went in for the kill. “A kiss goodnight. Is it really too much, Gavin?”

It's the power of words that creates and destroys. Vanquishing evil and injustice while finding eternal love in the process is all in a day's work. With the help of her critique partners and master cartographer imaginary places come to life.
