Review & Giveaway: Pawn by Aimée Carter

Pawn by Aimée Carter
Published Date: November 2013
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Genre: YA

The Story:
The Blackcoat Rebellion #1

For Kitty Doe, it seems like an easy choice. She can either spend her life as a III in misery, looked down upon by the higher ranks and forced to leave the people she loves, or she can become a VII and join the most powerful family in the country.
If she says yes, Kitty will be Masked—surgically transformed into Lila Hart, the Prime Minister's niece, who died under mysterious circumstances. As a member of the Hart family, she will be famous. She will be adored. And for the first time, she will matter.
There's only one catch. She must also stop the rebellion that Lila secretly fostered, the same one that got her killed …and one Kitty believes in. Faced with threats, conspiracies and a life that's not her own, she must decide which path to choose—and learn how to become more than a pawn in a twisted game she's only beginning to understand.

Interview with Aimée Carter:

BCM: What inspired you to write about this type of civilization?

AC: I wrote the first draft of PAWN in the middle of the 2008 election cycle, where both parties were absolutely convinced if the other won, the United States as we knew it would cease to exist. A lot of inspiration came from many of the worst case scenarios being batted around the political arena, including “death boards” for health care and the dangers of standardized testing. But while this is all incredibly interesting to me as a writer, the real story is in Kitty’s struggle to do whatever it takes to survive in a society that has all but rejected her worth as a human being due to a single lousy test.

BCM: If you were living in this time, with Kitty/Lila, what do you think your rank would be?

AC: I’ve been asked this question a lot, and it’s impossible for me to say. The aptitude test they take is based on our modern IQ test, complete with the bell curve, and while I’d like to think I’d do well, like Kitty, I’m a horrible test taker, so it’s impossible for me to say with any certainty.

BCM: Could you give us a break down of the ranks? What each means. Besides knowing that a rank of VII means a Hart.

AC: I don’t want to spoil too much, but in short: the rank of I means you don’t even get a shot at living in society – these would be people our society tends to classify as “intellectually disabled”. IIs and IIIs would be considered lower class citizens, while IVs and Vs would be considered middle class. VIs and VIIs – a rank only Harts can have – would be the upper classes of society.

BCM: What do you like most about writing?

AC: I love coming up with ideas and plotting them out. I also love dialogue and character dynamics, especially when I find a pair who banter like crazy. I love seeing the story unfold as I write, a lot like a reader sees the story unfold as they read, and while it can definitely be tough sometimes, there’s nothing else I’d rather do.

BCM: If you could live in any time period, what would it be and why?

AC: I wouldn’t want to live in the past. I’m pretty happy in modern times, with all of our technology and freedoms others didn’t necessarily have in the past, but I think living in the future would be pretty awesome. Not so far in the future that everything would be unrecognizable, but maybe fifty years or so – so long as I wouldn’t be living in Kitty’s world.
