About the BookRegret was for people with nothing to defend, people who had no water.

Lynn knows every threat to her pond: drought, a snowless winter, coyotes, and, most importantly, people looking for a drink. She makes sure anyone who comes near the pond leaves thirsty, or doesn't leave at all.

Confident in her own abilities, Lynn has no use for the world beyond the nearby fields and forest. Having a life means dedicating it to survival, and the constant work of gathering wood and water. Having a pond requires the fortitude to protect it, something Mother taught her well during their quiet hours on the rooftop, rifles in hand.

But wisps of smoke on the horizon mean one thing: strangers. The mysterious footprints by the pond, nighttime threats, and gunshots make it all too clear Lynn has exactly what they want, and they won’t stop until they get it….

With evocative, spare language and incredible drama, danger, and romance, debut author Mindy McGinnis depicts one girl’s journey in a barren world not so different than our own.

My Thoughts: It was obvious immediately when I began reading NOT A DROP TO DRINK that this book was going to be different. Refreshingly different. I was hooked from page one and wanted to know why water was so sacred, such an important commodity that our heroine would kill first and ask questions later just to protect what little she had.

Despite the fact that the first few chapters focused mostly on Lynn and her mother, the author's careful and well-timed reveals, kept the storyline dramatic and action packed enough to get my heart racing and kept the pages turning. I loved learning bit by bit what had happened to Lynn's world to leave it in such a bleak state, but also finding the clues as to what was to come.

When unexpected tragedy strikes, I enjoyed watching Lynn discover not only more about the world outside of her home and her pond, but also more about herself. Before long, Lynn must decide if she can trust this new side of herself, and whether not she's going to let new people in. With the help of her older neighber, Stubbs, and a few inexperienced travelers, Lynn realizes there is more to life on the pond than destruction and death and maybe, just maybe, she can actually find love if she allows herself.

I found NOT A DROP TO DRINK to be that rare kind of un-put-downable book that I look forward to more than more. With last minute twists and turns, I had a hard time thinking about anything but the story when I wasn't reading it, and I would definitely recommend this one!
