Character Interview, Review and Giveaway: Touching the Surface by Kimberly Sabatini

Touching the Surface by Kimberly Sabatini
Published Date: October 2012
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Genre: YA

The Story:
Experience the afterlife in this lyrical, paranormal debut novel that will send your heart soaring.
When Elliot finds herself dead for the third time, she knows she must have messed up, big-time. She doesn’t remember how she landed in the afterlife again, but she knows this is her last chance to get things right.

Elliot just wants to move on, but first she will be forced to face her past and delve into the painful memories she’d rather keep buried. Memories of people she’s hurt, people she’s betrayed…and people she’s killed.

As she pieces together the secrets and mistakes of her past, Elliot must find a way to earn the forgiveness of the person she’s hurt most, and reveal the truth about herself to the two boys she loves…even if it means losing them both forever.

My Review: So, I seem to have a problem.  I really like reading, and when I find a really good book, it's hard to do anything else!  Touching the Surface had me from the very first chapter.  I could tell that this wasn't going to be a "typical" afterlife book!  And I'm very glad for that!

Elliot is back in the afterlife, for the third time.  Which is supposedly not good.  We read and see how the souls learn and grow from their lives and how they discover the truth.  This book isn't excatly religious, so don't get that in your head.  But have you ever wondered what does happen to us after we die?  Kimberly Sabatini has given us a world in which we can see one interpretation.  And I love it.  There's so much emotion going on in this book, and finding out things aren't always what they seem.  A very good read for any person!

***Character Interview for Elliot***

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?

This is a bit of a weird question for me because the afterlife almost functions like a time machine that goes back to the past. At the Obmil, souls that have died but are unable to move forward, must Delve into the past. Each person looks backwards, in order to discover, what will help them move on. Having a time machine to give a sneak peek into the future would make the process of figuring things out a lot less stressful and a whole lot easier.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?

Dr. Seuss!!!! I love everything he’s ever written. But while The Cat in the Hat reigns supreme, I have to say I have a soft spot for Oh, the Places You’ll Go. I sometimes think that when Dr. Seuss was writing it, he must have remembered the afterlife and what’s involved in navigating it. I reread it at the Obmil all the time while eating green eggs and ham. You can totally do that in the afterlife—you don’t even need food coloring.

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?

My best friend Julia has taught me a lot of things, but these two have really stuck with me…

“…invisibility is a choice…”

“…all it takes is one small change in perspective…”

What is your guilty pleasure?

I love hiking. There is nothing better than spending time in the woods and finding my way to the top of a rock with a view. It helps me to see where I’m going and where I’ve come from. (Obviously I need all the help I can get in that department.) I’m also a pretty big fan of chocolate and pizza.

What words or expression do you overuse?

I tend to say “what?” and “actually” all the time. And I head thunk quite a bit, but don’t judge me until you’ve screwed up THREE lives in a row. * head thunk *

What are the top 3 things on your bucket list?

3. Hike the Grand Canyon

2. Learn to play the piano.

1. Have a child. In all of my lives, I’ve never had a child. I’m hoping some day I’ll be ready to do that.
