Blog Tour: IF I SHOULD DIE by Amy Plum - An Interview

I'm pleased to have the wonderful Amy Plum here with us at BCM again today. As part of the IF I SHOULD DIE blog tour, hosted by Mundie Moms (you can follow along with the tour by following THIS LINK), Amy was awesome enough to grant us an interview. But first, here's a little about the book:

About: I will not lose another person I love. I will not let history repeat itself.

Vincent waited lifetimes to find me, but in an instant our future together was shattered. He was betrayed by someone we both called a friend, and I lost him. Now our enemy is determined to rule over France’s immortals, and willing to wage a war to get what they want.

It shouldn’t be possible, none of it should be, but this is my reality. I know Vincent is somewhere out there, I know he’s not completely gone, and I will do anything to save him. After what we’ve already fought to achieve, a life without Vincent is unimaginable. He once swore to avoid dying—to go against his nature and forsake sacrificing himself for others—so that we could be together.  How can I not risk everything to bring my love back to me?

***Interview***

BCM: Hi Amy! It's a pleasure to have you at BCM again. IF I SHOULD DIE, the third book in your DIE FOR ME series is about to release. How has the journey from book one to book three been for you?

AP: Hello, and thanks for having me back! To be honest, the journey’s been a wild one. I went from writing DIE FOR ME as a potential stand-alone book, and then was given the green light to create a whole universe for my revenants, ending up with three novels and a novella (DIE FOR HER). Over the course of the books, I discovered characters I didn’t know existed in the beginning, and was able to explore my characters and their world in depth. To say it’s been exciting would be an understatement.

BCM: How did writing IF I SHOULD DIE compare to writing DIE FOR ME?

AP: When I was writing DIE FOR ME, I really had a blank palette. I had a whole world to create, mythology to develop, characters to become familiar with, and rules to establish. However, if you tell readers how everything works all at once, it’s overwhelming. Knowing that I had several books to write, I was able to sprinkle information lightly over the course of the trilogy, bringing up small “reveals” little by little until I finally got to the massive revelations of the final book. So IF I SHOULD DIE is the culmination of the series, where the reader finally understands what I’ve been working up to. It was very exciting to write.

BCM: Can readers expect any surprises in IF I SHOULD DIE?

AP: Yes. LOTS of surprises. None of which I can tell you without spoiling. (Sorry!)

BCM: Besides promotions for IF I SHOULD DIE, what are you working on now?

AP: I’m working on my new series, called AFTER THE END. It is a completely different world from that of the revenants, and is set in America this time!

BCM: What has been your favorite experience with writing this series?

AP: My favorite experience has been my contact with my readers. I had no idea how generous and enthusiastic a fandom could be. DIE FOR ME’s fans have embraced both the books and me, and I couldn’t be more grateful for their support!

BCM: How have you overcome any writing challenges?

AP: My greatest challenge is finding the time to write. With a recent move (from the French countryside to Paris) and two young kids with an active school and activity schedule, I have had to become super-organized in order to have the time I need to write.

BCM: Is there anything about this book that has surprised you?

AP: There were a few major events in the books that I knew would happen from the very beginning. But in both books 2 and 3 Kate had to go to some interesting places in order to achieve what she needed to for her relationship with Vincent to work. I was surprised by the details. (For example, I had no clue Kate and others would go to New York, nor that there was a major collection of revenant-themed art being hidden away in the basement of the Metropolitan museum.)

***About the Author***

Amy Plum is author of the International Bestsellers DIE FOR ME (an Indie Next List pick, Romance Times top pick, and recipient of a starred review from School Library Journal), UNTIL I DIE, and digital novella DIE FOR HER. The final book in the series, IF I SHOULD DIE, will be released in May 2013.

After being raised in Birmingham, Alabama, in a rather restrictive environment, AMY PLUM escaped to Chicago to an even more restrictive environment at a university that expelled people for dancing. (And where she was called to the dean’s office for “wearing too much black”.) After all of that restrictiveness, she was forced to run far far away, specifically to Paris, France, where she only wore black and danced all she wanted.

After five years in Paris, she ventured to London, where she got an M.A. in Medieval Art History, specializing in Early Sienese Painting (1260-1348) mainly because it promised almost no hope of finding a paying job afterward.

Amy managed to find work in the world of art and antiques in New York. But after almost a decade of high-pressure lifestyle in the Big Apple, she swapped her American city for a French village of 1300 inhabitants.

After signing with HarperCollins for the DIE FOR ME series, Amy left her job as an English professor at Tours University to write full-time. She now lives in Paris with her two kids and big red dog Ella.
