Aerenden by Kristen Taber: Review, Giveaway, and New Release

Here at BCM we don't only read and review books from the big publishing houses (although we do love them), we also read and review, and help push lesser known books/authors. One such case is the Aerenden series by Kristen Taber. This series and author, who is self published, was referred to me by a friend who knows the author. I am really glad she did, as you will see by my review of The Child Returns, book one in the series. Today is also the book birthday of the second book in the series: The Gildonae Alliance. And to celebrate today's release, we are giving away an e-copy (through Smashwords, so it will be of the e-reader copy of your choice) to one lucky person. So fill out the form at the end of this post for your chance to win.

Aerenden: The Child Returns (book 1)

published May 21, 2012

Paperback: 382 pages

Goodreads: Seventeen-year-old Meaghan has no idea her perfect life has been a lie — until she witnesses her parents’ brutal murders at the hands of red-eyed creatures.

After nearly sharing their fate, she escapes with her best friend, Nick, who tells her the creatures are called Mardróch. They come from another world, and so does she. Now that the Mardróch have found her, she must return to her homeland of Ærenden or face death.

Left with little choice, she follows Nick into a strange world both similar to Earth and drastically different. Vines have the ability to attack. Monkeys freeze their victims with a glare. Men create bombs from thin air. Even Meaghan’s newly discovered empath power turns into a danger she cannot control.

But control becomes the least of her worries once the Mardróch begin targeting her. When Nick confesses he knows the reason they want her, she learns the truth behind the kingdom's fifteen-year civil war — a long-buried secret that could cost Meaghan her life.

As I stated earlier, I was recommended this book by a friend who knows the author, and got to read the book in its writing stages. She had praised this book to me even then. And I can see where her praise comes from. I fell in love with this book in the first chapter, and that stayed with me all throughout the book.

Taber's writing is amazing. She is a master storyteller with a great narrative voice. And the detail she puts into her earthlike world is easily imagined by the reader. It puts them right into the thick of it.
As I was reading this, although it takes place in the here and now with human characters (albeit not of Earth, and each with powers of their own), the protagonist being a 17 year old girl, I kept thinking of the Lord of the Rings saga. There is just that epic adventure/quest feel about this book.

It is refreshing to read a paranormal/supernatural/fantasy story that doesn't have vampires or werewolves or fey or any of the other characters that I love, but seem to be the staple of that type of book.

This is definitely a book I would recommend to anyone looking for a good read.  And don't forget to enter for your chance to win a copy at the end of this post. Then you can get lost in the world of Aerenden too. (and it will be worth it)

This book left me wanting more, and dying to know what is going to happen next. Fortunately, I don't have too long to wait. Book two, The Gildonae Alliance comes out today. Let's all wish Kristen a big Happy Book Birthday!!!!

eBook: 270 pages / 215 KB

Goodreads: Several months after Meaghan’s return to Ærenden, the kingdom’s war has taken a turn for the worse. The Mardróch army hunts the new King and Queen, destroying villages in its wake. And Meaghan and Nick, training for battle in their remote section of wilderness, are far from safe. Danger hides in shadows and behind innocent faces. Allies become foes. Each day is a fight to survive. But in the end, only one threat matters. And it’s a threat they never see coming.

I cannot wait to read this book!!!!!!!  And isn't the cover beautiful?

About the author: Born in Bangor, Maine, Kristen Taber spent her childhood at the feet of an Irish storytelling grandfather, learning to blend fact with fiction, and imagination with reality. She lived within the realm of the tales that captivated her, breathing life into characters and crafting stories even before she could read.

Those stories have since turned into over a hundred poems, several short tales, and five manuscripts in both the Young Adult and Adult genres.  Currently, Ms. Taber is completing the five-part Ærenden series from her home office in the suburbs of Washington D.C.
