Does the audio book hold true to what's in a writers head?

This is a tough question to answer. I guess it’s like comparing a book turned into a movie. Most movies have disappointed me, partly because my imagination is so much greater and limitless, of course. After listening to my own head/thoughts all the months writing/editing The Emerald Talisman, no one would have been able to fit that voice 100%, which is why it was hard to choose someone for the task. I actually wasn’t even sure I’d wanted an audio book for my novels because I knew this to be true of myself. Only after I’d attended a conference and learned in a class with some New York Bestsellers that each of them had a difficult time listening to their readers for their novels was my mind changed. How could I alienate a group of readers who’d rather listen than read? Luckily, since I’m Indie, I was able to be involved in the process hands on.

Mary Morgan was my choice for Julia and I couldn’t be happier. Her light, airy, sweet, and sure voice was perfect for my heroine, and Mary’s acting talents to interpret the supporting characters was absolutely fantastic. I can’t even begin to understand how someone could painstakingly read an entire book and keep their voice to character the entire time. She was a gem to work with and cared about my book just as much as me. Creating an audio book with her was a delightful process.

 Book summary:

You can run from your destiny, but you can't hide.

If for no other reason than to help endure the hormonal rush of high school, sixteen-year-old Julia Parker would trade her ability to feel her fellow students' emotions in a heartbeat, especially half the boys in class.

When the beguiling Nicholas uses his superhuman strength to rescue Julia from the edge of a cliff before she's devoured by a bloodthirsty stalker, Julia is suddenly thrust into an underground world where people and animals are often one and the same. Fellow high school students disappear and only Julia and Nicholas know the truth. While Nicholas, a vampire hunter, is out stopping the ever-growing coven, an old friend entices Julia to join him on the dark side and a psychic tells Julia she alone is the key to stopping the madness, problem is it'll require Nicholas' life.

  1. Huh...thanks for the insight. I always wondered about the making of audio-books, and how just one person could accurately portray so many character voices. Must have been fascinating to be a part of!
