UNBREAK MY HEART by Melissa Walker
Available: May 22, 2012
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA

About (from Goodreads): Sophomore year broke Clementine Williams’ heart. She fell for her best friend’s boyfriend and long story short: he’s excused, but Clem is vilified and she heads into summer with zero social life.

Enter her parents’ plan to spend the summer on their sailboat. Normally the idea of being stuck on a tiny boat with her parents and little sister would make Clem break out in hives, but floating away sounds pretty good right now.

Then she meets James at one of their first stops along the river. He and his dad are sailing for the summer and he’s just the distraction Clem needs. Can he break down Clem’s walls and heal her broken heart?

Told in alternating chapters that chronicle the year that broke Clem’s heart and the summer that healed it, Unbreak My Heart is a wonderful dual love story that fans of Sarah Dessen, Deb Caletti, and Susane Colasanti will flock to.

BCM: UNBREAK MY HEART is written as a dual love story. What are the joys and challenges of writing a book this way?

MW: The joys: You get to write two different sections of your characters' lives, so seeing the growth between the stages is fun. The challenges: Back and forth is hard. It can get confusing if it's not done smoothly. I rearranged things a LOT as I wrote, and then after I was "done". Revising took a while!

BCM: Of all the characters you've written, which one do you feel like you connected with most and why?

MW: My very first main character, Violet from Violet on the Runway, was most like me. I gave her my voice, because that's all I knew how to write at first. But the other characters I've worked with, they've sort of told me who they are, and that is a ton of fun too. They all feel like friends.
BCM:If you could have gone anywhere to "unbreak" your own heart as a teenager, where would you have gone?
MW: Probably to therapy. I could not unbreak my heart as a teenager--it was perpetually wounded, then soaring, then mending again. That rollercoaster is all part of the fun though.

BCM:What are your most recent favorite books?
MW: I wrote about three recent favorites here:

BCM: Will you be celebrating the release of UNBREAK MY HEART? Can you share where and when for our readers so they'll know where to find you? And where they can order signed copies?

MW: I am really late on this! There is a possible party in the works, but I will tell you that there will definitely be signed copies at Books of Wonder in NYC ( Thanks!

BCM: Thank you so much, Melissa! It was great having you!
