ALL THESE LIVES by Sarah Wylie
Available Date: June 5, 2012
Publisher: Farrar, Straus & Giroux (BYR)

About (from Goodreads): Sixteen-year-old Dani is convinced she has nine lives. As a child she twice walked away from situations where she should have died. But Dani’s twin, Jena, isn’t so lucky.  She has cancer and might not even be able to keep her one life. Dani’s father is in denial. Her mother is trying to hold it together and prove everything’s normal.  And Jena is wasting away.  To cope, Dani sets out to rid herself of all her extra lives.  Maybe they’ll be released into the universe and someone who wants to live more than she does will get one.  Someone like Jena.  But just when Dani finds herself at the breaking point, she’s faced with a startling realization.  Maybe she doesn’t have nine lives after all.  Maybe she really only ever had one.

My Review: Dani's life pretty much sucks right now. Her twin sister, Jena, is dying of cancer and all Dani can think about is how she wants to save her. And maybe she can. She knows she's somehow survived death twice already, so what would happen if she really did have nine lives? Could she rid herself of a few extra lives in the hopes of making her sister better again?

ALL THESE LIVES chronicles Dani's attempts to spare her sister's life by risking her own, and I'll admit it wasn't easy to like Dani at first. But then, it didn't talk long to figure out why and to understand Dani's cynicism and self destructive behavior. She loves her sister, and at the end of the day, no matter what mistakes and all around bad choices she makes, I loved her for all she did. She's sarcastic, somewhat rude, but deep inside she's scared and worried and willing to do anything to stop the deadly disease riddling Jena's body.

ALL THESE LIVES is one of those books that came out of nowhere for me and really sunk it's teeth in. I couldn't get enough of Wylie's literary writing and I loved that even the secondary characters in this novel weren't easily forgotten. Dani and Jena's parents were very present and easy to connect with and I'll truly appreciated the roles played by Spencer, Candy and Jack. Especially Jack. ALL THESE LIVES is poignant, dark and utterly unforgettable! There really are no words for the amount of love I have for this book. It's just an amazing read and definitely one I look forward to reading again.

My Rating:

  1. This looks really good actually. It sounds a little like Break by Hannah Moskowitz and I really liked that book. I love stories with big sibling bonds.
