Review: CINDER by Marissa Meyer

CINDER (Lunar Chronicles #1) by Marissa Meyer
Release Date: January 3, 2012
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends

About: Cinder, a gifted mechanic in New Beijing, is also a cyborg. She's reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister's sudden illness. But when her life becomes entwined with the handsome Prince Kai's, she finds herself at the centre of a violent struggle between the desires of an evil queen - and a dangerous temptation.

Cinder is caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal. Now she must uncover secrets about her mysterious past in order to protect Earth's future.

My Review: I have to be honest. When I first got CINDER, I wasn't sure how I was going to take it. It sounded interesting, but not my typical type of book. Cyborgs aren't exactly on my short list of things I love in books.

But man, this book grabbed me so fast and so tightly, I couldn't put the book down. CINDER was a wonderfully magical retelling of a favorite old fairytale that I couldn't get enough of. I loved Cinder's character and her ability to accept the fate that life had given her. She wasn't at all what I expected and I loved her all the more for it.

And Kai, well, Kai is just as loveable. He had no idea who CINDER really is and while we all know that he has to eventually find about Cinder and her past, Meyer doesn't stick to the fairytale quite as much as you'd think. The outcome is awesome and totally unique, and makes the story just that much better. There is so much more to Cinder than you originally think.

I loved this book from beginning to end and simply cannot wait for book two. I have purchased the book in both hard copy and e-book and am definitely planning to get an autograph when I go out to Seattle in May. CINDER is definitely a book I'll read again and again.

  1. I loved this one too! So glad to hear that you ended up liking it even though it wasn't your "typical read" as you say. Can't wait till book 2, and I'm so jealous you might get to meet Marissa Meyer!

  3. I loved this book too. The ending had me thinking more of Ever After than the original Cinderella.

I'm not quite sure what's going on with the series, I don't know how much of a presence Cinder's going to have in the next one, Scarlet and I'm dying to find out what happens. When you see Marissa, would you ask her if I can just have the whole series now, please?!
