Also, be sure to stop by the Best I've Read 2011 blog for our feature on VANISH by Sophie Jordan.

Author Suzy Turner agreed to tell us how she came up with The Raven Saga. I love this series. I can't wait for three but I do not want this series to end. The world Suzy has created is INCREDIBLE!!!

I didn't know I was going to write YA fantasy until I returned from the most amazing holiday in Western Canada in 2009.The place just spoke to me, you know? It drew me in like no other place ever has. In particular, there was this place called Powell River where we sat having a picnic one day and my imagination literally went into overdrive.

I'd recently been reading The Twilight Saga and could imagine the area filled with supernatural beings like werewolves, changelings and vampires. A few months later, after I'd returned home, I suddenly had this image of a young girl sitting on a bed in a sparsely decorated room when suddenly she spotted two ravens tapping at her window. This would later become a scene in my first YA book: Raven, Part 1 of The Raven Saga. The young girl became known as Lilly, an English girl who moves to Canada to be with her grandfather after her parents mysteriously disappear. The first book focuses on what happens to Lilly during her first year in Canada - including the discovery of some bizarre truths about her and her family.

In the beginning, she is quite naive and then she really grows up in this book. I've had readers tell me that their hearts literally ached for Lilly. What a compliment! In the second book, December Moon, I thought it was important to bring more joy and fun to Lilly's life, so it centers on her relationship with her best friend, a quirky girl called December who finds out a startling truth about her own ancestry right at the beginning of the story. December Moon was enormous fun to write. I can tell you, currently, I am writing the third and final installment in The Raven Saga, entitled The Lost Soul, which is due out in March 2012.
