After Obsession by Carrie Jones & Steven E. Wedel
Release Date: September 13, 2011
The Story: Aimee and Alan have secrets. Both teens have unusual pasts and abilities they prefer to keep hidden. But when they meet each other, in a cold Maine town, they can't stop their secrets from spilling out. Strange things have been happening lately, and they both feel that something-or someone- is haunting them. They're wrong. Despite their unusual history and powers, it's neither Aimee nor Alan who is truly haunted. It's Alan's cousin Courtney who, in a desperate plea to find her missing father, has invited a demon into her life-and into her body. Only together can Aimee and Alan exorcise the ghost. And they have to move quickly, before it devours not just Courtney but everything around her.
My Review: Aimee's best friend is acting strange. Really strange. Aimee's boyfriend, Blake, isn't being his usual self either. This happens to work out for the best for Aimee since she's suddenly finding herself drawn to her best friend's cousin, Alan, who is new to town. Both Aimee and Alan have abilities that they have chosen to keep secret, but when things only get worse with Courtney, they realize things are not what they seem. And they are the only two that can help. They discover that Courtney may be possessed (eep!) by The River Man. A ghost who has been responsible for more than a few deaths in their local river. This hits very close to home for Aimee, who lost her own mother to the river.
The romance in this book is thankfully not lustful and unbelievable, but sweet and totally interesting. I enjoyed getting to know each character and learning about Alan's Native Indian history. Alan and Aimee compliment each other very well, leaving very little room to doubt their chemistry. I love the way they open up to one another and nothing seems forced. The secondary characters weave great layers into this story with interesting plot twists and witty banter.
After Obsession is a page turner that surprised me at every corner. Adorable and creepy at the same time, After Obsession was breath of fresh air for me. I received this book at BEA and after reading the synopsis, I was more than excited to read it. The alternating voices of Aimee and Alan were instantly believable. Steven Wedel proves to be an exciting new author in the YA world. I'd definitely recommend this one...but you may want to read it during the daylight hours.
