Review: The Day Before by Lisa Schroeder

The Day Before by Lisa Schroeder
Release Date: June 28, 2011
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Genre: Contemporary YA

The Story: Amber’s life is spinning out of control. All she wants is to turn up the volume on her iPod until all of the demands of family and friends fade away. So she sneaks off to the beach to spend a day by herself.

Then Amber meets Cade. Their attraction is instant, and Amber can tell he’s also looking for an escape. Together they decide to share a perfect day: no pasts, no fears, no regrets.

The more time that Amber spends with Cade, the more she’s drawn to him. And the more she’s troubled by his darkness. Because Cade’s not just living in the now—he’s living each moment like it’s his last.

My Review: There is magic infused into every line of a Lisa Schroeder book. Once I pick one up, there is no way I'm putting it down until I've reached the end. The Day Before is no exception to this.

In the beginning, we learn that Amber is struggling with something deep, something she can't quite understand and on the day before her life is to change forever, she needs to have time for herself. She picks up and sneaks out of the house early in the morning determined to have one day soley for the purpose of being free of the stress that her life has become.

When she meets Cade, she's intrigued and grateful to have someone to spend the day with--someone who doesn't know who she is and what's happening the next day. The thing is, Cade has some secrets of his own and it isn't long before the truth threatens to tear them part before they're ever truly able to be together.

The Day Before is emotional, raw and brilliant from beginning to end. Lisa has a talent in telling stories that don't need to be overwritten. Every word on the page is necessary, there for a reason. Every line will leave you hanging on for the next. Every time I finish one of Lisa's books, I just want to pick it up and dive right back in. This book is everything I love about prose, and just ratchets Schroeder even higher on my list of all-time favorite authors. Keep them coming, Lisa, and I will keep buying!
