The Story Behind The Vampire Stalker
The idea for The Vampire Stalker came to me one day while I was watching 80s videos on YouTube. The video “Take On Me” by A-Ha came on. In it, a girl is reading a comic and gets pulled inside to join the hero. Eventually she’s forced out of the world of the comic, and the guy she loves struggles to join her in her world.
That got me thinking about how we can get so involved in our books that we can fall in love with a character. I’ve received some great emails from readers over the years, and many of those readers professed to be in love with certain characters. Once, while I was doing a school visit, two girls got into an argument over which guy in my book SNITCH was hotter, Eric or Black Chuck. All of this had me wondering: what makes a character so vivid that readers can almost believe they’re real people?
And that led me to ask: What if the characters we love so much actually ARE real? What if some writers can tap into the lives of people in another dimension? And if that’s the case, could our world potentially overlap with the world in a book?
So my question for you is: If you had to pick one book character who could be real—and come into your life—who would you choose?
As a teen, I would’ve chosen Hawkeye from Last of the Mohicans. I had this poster on my bedroom wall for the longest time.
