Today we have Rebecca Russell, author of Odessa: The Seraphym Wars, here with us for a guest post. She's sharing her book picks with us. Check it out:
1-Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer An end of the world glimpse into a teenaged girl’s mind about what is really and truly important in life. Held me to gripped to the book until finished and wanted more.
2-Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins Again, what is truly important in life, when all is said and done. And just how far will someone go to survive?
3-The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley Actually, ANYTHING by this fabulous author. She has a slew of books out about reworked fairy tales. My fav of hers is the Hero and the Crown, which won the Newberry Award. Once again, it has a strong female hero who learns to sword fight and ride horses in a strange world out of the need to survive.
4-The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare These are probably the best-written books I’ve read in a very long time. Her writing has me gripped as much as the characters and storyline. I only hope to one day be able to write as well as she does.
5-The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemmingway I make it a point to read Classics occasionally. I chose Hemmingway because of his sparse word usage. He writes in crisp, short sentences and I enjoyed his style of writing. I tried to use my own version while writing Odessa and the following books and discovered there are times to use short sentences, and others to use long.
6-Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr by Christopher Paolini I flew through these books. Well-written, intriguing multiple plots intricately interwoven, fascinating characters you fall in love with and an amazing world—all created by a teenager. Wow! Even if you don’t love dragons, the story is worth reading just for itself.
That’s about all I’ve read lately because I was writing, editing and marketing. I have a huge to-be-read pile, however:
- Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton
- Castle in the Air by Diana Wynne Jones
- Dragonhaven by Robyn McKinley
- Nick of Time by Ted Bell
- The City, Not Long After by Pat Murphy
- Birth of the Firebringer by Meredith Ann Pierce
- Fallen by Lauren Kate
- Hunted by N.M. Browne
- Heck: Where the Bad Kids Go by Dale E. Basye
- Airborn by Kenneth Oppel
- Clockwork Angel By Cassandra Clare
