The Healing Spell by Kimberley Griffiths Little
Publisher: Scholastic
Release Date: July 1, 2010
Genre: MG (Ages 9-12)

The Story: (from Scholastic) Eleven-year-old Livie is living with a secret and it's crushing her. She knows she is responsible for her mother's coma, but she can't tell anyone. And it's up to her to find a way to wake her mamma up.

Stuck in the middle of three sisters, hiding a forbidden pet alligator, and afraid to disappoint her daddy, whom she loves more than anyone else, Livie struggles to find her place within her own family as she learns about the powers of faith and redemption.

Kimberley Griffiths Little brings lyricism and a powerful resonance to Livie's tender, deeply moving, and often humorous story.

My Review:  The Healing Spell is a sweet book about a daughter's love for her mother, even if they don't see eye-to-eye on everything. Livie's mama is sick, in a coma in fact, and it's all Livie's fault. No one knows that but her and it's really bothering Livie to keep this secret. Livie has a bit of an attitude to her but it didn't make me dislike her at all. I found it endearing and thought perhaps she reminded me a bit of myself when I was her age.

The scenery of the Louisiana bayous were brilliantly described and quite beautiful. But the thing that struck me most about this story was the obvious love in Livie's family. Even though Livie is a daddy's girl and even though she doesn't always get along with her mother, the memories that Livie shares about her mother are colored with love. I really enjoyed the storyline between Livie and her older sister Faye and was happy at how their relationship changed throughout the book.

Livie is a strong yet still vulnerable character who wants to undo what happened to her mama more than anything. When nothing else seems to be working to bring her mama out of the coma, Livie attempts to heal her mother with a spell but it isn't until Livie forgives herself that the spell will work. I really loved the forgiveness theme in this book and thought that the author did a fabulous job of bringing to to life all the emotions this family was experiencing. Overall, I loved this book!
