#BIR2010 - Interview with Holly Cupala & Tell Me a Secret Giveaway

Welcome to day two of BIR2010! We hope you are enjoying all of the interviews, guest posts and giveaways. Today is just the second day for all the fun so be sure you are checking all 9 blogs at the official BIR2010 site to make sure you aren't missing anything.

Our first interview of today is with Holly Cupala, author of the amazing Tell Me a Secret. I can't tell you how thrilled we are to have her here on BCM. Not only is her book incredible but so is she. We adore her! Thank you Holly for joining us for BIR2010!

Enjoy the interview and then be sure to enter the giveaway to win a copy of her book, Tell Me a Secret below. Holly is also being featured on Late Bloomer Online and I'm a Reader, Not a Writer today. Check out their sites to learn more about Holly and to have more opportunities to win her book!

BCM: Name three of your favorite moments in Tell Me a Secret.

HC: I really love the Halloween party—the Q-tip fight! It’s such a weighty moment for Miranda, contrasted with this crazy scene in the background. I love the part where Miranda and Kamran first meet, very fun to write and draw on those memories of early romance. Turkey Talk with DaShawn (there was Turkey Talk in the town where I grew up, seriously!).

BCM: Tell us something fun that most people don’t know about you.

HC: You might not realize this from reading Tell Me a Secret, but I have a really big silly streak. Just ask my best friends or my family! A little of that comes out in the next novel, Don’t Breathe a Word. It’s an intense story, but some of the characters surprised me with their outrageous humor. I’m working on a third right now and hoping more of that will pop out.

BCM: Do you have any really sweet or funny fan stories you can share with us?

HC: Fans have been so incredible! I had no idea making connections with readers would be such a part of my life now. I’ve met them in person, heard their stories, chatted writing secrets, they’ve made art and presents for me—one is even writing a song from the point of view of Xanda (I’m hoping she’ll share it when she’s finished!). I’m amazed and grateful for everyone who has taken the time to read the book.

BCM: What is your favorite place to write? Do you have any habits that you do each time you sit down to write or do you just jump right into it

HC: I procrastinate. A lot! I suppose you could say that’s a habit, because I can’t seem to shake it. It helps to set a timer and reward myself with candy along the way (current favorite: gummy stars from Whole Foods). I love to write at my dining room table so I can look out the window, but I usually end up in the office because it’s more ergonomic.

BCM: What is your best read of 2010?

HC: Just one? I can’t boil it down to just one. I loved Stephanie Kuehnert’s Ballads of Suburbia, Conrad Wesselhoeft’s Adios, Nirvana, Janet Lee Carey’s Dragons of Noor. There’s never enough time for wonderful books.

The Story: It's tough living in the shadow of a dead girl. . . .

In the five years since her bad-girl sister Xanda's death, Miranda Mathison has wondered about the secret her sister took to the grave, and what really happened the night she died. Now, just as Miranda is on the cusp of her dreams—a best friend to unlock her sister's world, a ticket to art school, and a boyfriend to fly her away from it all—Miranda has a secret all her own.

When two lines on a pregnancy test confirm her worst fears, Miranda is stripped of her former life. She must make a choice with tremendous consequences and finally face her sister's demons and her own.

In this powerful debut novel, stunning new talent Holly Cupala illuminates the dark struggle of a girl who must let go of her past to find a way into her own future.
