#BIR2010 - Interview with Alyson Noel & Dark Flame Giveaway

Alyson Noel is the author of the bestselling series The Immortals. Several of us here at BCM cannot get enough of this series so we are beyond thrilled that Alyson has agreed to be interviewed for the Best I've Read 2010 event.

We hope you enjoy the interview and be sure to enter for a chance to win Dark Flame for yourself below!

BCM: How many books can we expect in the Radiance series for Riley and her new talent in the afterlife?
AN: There will be four books to start. The first book, RADIANCE, picks up right where Evermore left off, with Riley on the other side of the bridge, firmly ensconced in a place called Here where time is always Now. It was an absolute blast to write, and I really hope readers enjoy it too! The second book, SHIMMER, sees Riley vacationing on St. John, Virgin Island, only to come across a young ghost named Rebecca who is not at all what see seems . . .it’ll be in stores on 03.15.11. And I’m about to begin work on the third book now!

BCM: Where do you get your inspiration for your stories?

AN: Most of my writing is inspired by my own life experiences, and The Immortals series was inspired by grief. A few years ago I lost three people I loved in five months, and shortly after that I nearly lost my husband to leukemia (he’s in full remission now!). Experiencing that sort of intense grief and fear got me thinking a lot about life and death, mortality and immortality, the bonds that tie us even after a loved one is gone, and how our youth loving culture sort of seeks physical immortality by trying to remain youthful looking for as long as we can—and yet, what would happen if we really could achieve it? What would it mean for us, our loved ones, society in general?  And since I’ve been interested in all things paranormal since I was a kid, Ever and Damen’s story seemed like the perfect vehicle to explore all of those themes.

BCM: I loved the short story in Kisses from Hell, have you ever thought about making that short story longer?  Or is that the benefit of short stories, leaving the reader with their own thoughts?
AN: I had so much fun writing, Bring Me to Life, that about half-way in I felt sad that I couldn’t expand on it—I would’ve loved to go really deep into that story! But, with such a defined ending, I’m not really sure where to go from there—though I haven’t entirely ruled it out!

BCM: What is your favorite place to write? Do you have a schedule for when you write or do you just do it when you can?

AN: I have a home office with a desk, chair, computer, research books, scented candles, a place for my cup of green tea—all the things that I need! And due to very tight deadlines, I keep to a really tight schedule, writing pretty much all day, every day, including most holidays and weekends.
BCM: Can you name one moment that stands out as a favorite since you've become a writer?
AN: Seeing my first book, FAKING 19, on the bookstore shelves was definitely a dream-come-true moment! I worked on that story off and on for 15 years, so it was amazing to finally see the finished product!  Also, hitting #1 on the New York Times Bestsellers list was a pretty surreal moment too. I’d always dreamed it would happen, but when it did, it came as a great and wonderful surprise!

  2. Wow- So much loss in her life. That was a really good interview. It's interesting to read the personal parts of an author's life, what influenced them to write.

    Thanks for the giveaway.
