Interview & Giveaway with Author Royce Buckingham

If you haven't already heard about Royce Buckingham or his book, The Dead Boys, trust me, you want to. Nicole will be posting her review very soon but until then we'd like to offer you a chance win a copy yourself. Royce was nice enough to let us interview him so I hope you enjoy it!

BCM: I love the graphics used for the chapters and the cover, did you get to have a say in it?

RB: No.  I was as surprised as everyone else.  And I love it!  I dig how the branches reach for Teddy and change very subtly-but-ominously each chapter.  It even scares me…

BCM: Are there any characters that are similar to you, or your boys?

RB: I think that there are parts of me in my protagonists in every book.  I was definitely one of the most timid, scared kids I knew.  Walter is very much a conglomeration of two of my friends from childhood—the crazy, wacky, sometimes scary friends that got me into most of my trouble.

BCM: Did you have any beta readers, while writing The Dead Boys?

RB: My wife is definitely a beta.  My older son was 8 when I was writing The DB’s.  I ran a number of things past him to see if they would work.  The one that my editor cut was a scene where Teddy is attacked in the shower by the tree, which comes up through the drain…which really happens!  That one scared my son, so I knew it was working.  He couldn’t shower without being nervous for a while.

BCM: I belong to a writers group, do you have any advice on getting an agent/getting published?

RB: For children’s books, you must join SCBWI (the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators).  This organization has access (and advice about) all of the agents and editors, and it’s extremely supportive of both published and not-yet-published authors.  Other than that…write, write, write.  10,000 hours is a good goal.  You should be published in some form by the time you put in that many hours.

BCM: Do you have any books in the works that we can look forward to?

RB: Oooooooh yeah!  I have one right now that my editor at Putnam is working on with me.  It’s got teen boys, teen girls, spies, and jet-packs.  Too much fun to describe in full, but let’s just say the title already rocks…DEATHWING.  Sound awesome?  Yeah, everyone at Putnam thinks so too!
