Review: Bring on the Night by Jeri Smith-Ready

Bring on the Night by Jeri Smith-Ready

Release Date: July 27, 2010

Publisher: Pocket Books (a division of Simon and Schuster)

Genre: Urban Fantasy

The story: In this third book in the WVMP Radio series, Ciara (pronounced kee-ra) has mostly gotten out of the con artist life. She is still working for the hugely popular radio station WVMP, "The Lifeblood of Rock and Roll", is living with her super hot vampire DJ boyfriend, Shane and taking care of her vamp dog.
In fact the only downfall to her new lifestyle is the fact that she has to fulfill a bargain made with the Control. She now has to work for them in exchange for letting Shane still interact with his family.
After being assigned to a special ops division of the Control, Ciara begins to question why they really wanted her, and is suspicious that it could have something to do with her blood.
Worse than that, a superbug type virus has been spreading through Sherwood, and the dead are starting to rise again. Now Ciara doesn't just have to deal with vampires, but zombies as well.
What caused the viral outbreak? Is there a connection to the walking dead (as opposed to the undead)?

My review: There is a lot going on in this book that kept me going, wow, did not see that coming. So I am definitely going to try and keep my review as spoiler-free as possible.
I loved this book. On top of all the surprises that kept jumping out at me, the story was as great as I expect from Jeri Smith-Ready. This is one of my favorite series, and not only because it is about vampires. Authors now a days all seem to have their own vampire mythologies, and Smith-Ready is no exception. Her take on vampire lore is different, and very interesting.
There is also a lot of different music references in this series, everything from blues right up through grunge, which I love. The characters are all very realistic and I can really feel myself empathizing with them, whether it be for something good or bad.
I am really looking forward to the next book in the series, Let it Bleed, due to come out August 2011 (I really hate those long waits!).

I give Bring on the Night 4 1/2 books.
