At the end of Heavenly, Zoe's world is turned upside down once again. In Penitence we see her trying to adjust to this new way of life. Not only is she seeing good spirits but she is now seeing evil ones as well.
Even though Matthias has disappeared, Zoe is determined to fulfill her purpose in life - she's just not sure what that purpose is. Her brother's drug addiction seems to be getting worse, her parents are on the verge of a separation and Zoe struggles to keep her ever-weakening friendship with Britt going.
When a handsome and oddly familiar new spirit appears Zoe is grateful. She wants to believe he was sent to help her but quickly learns he isn't what he appears to be. Suddenly, not only is her life in danger but so are the lives of those she loves.
I enjoyed Penitence every bit as much as I enjoyed Heavenly. There is a surprising and exciting love triangle that left me confused as to who I love more - something I consider to be a huge positive. There are some intense dramatic and romantic moments that will leave you on the edge of your seat. I cannot wait to read book three, Absolution, due out October 11, 2010.
