Wings by Aprilynne Pike
Laurel was just a normal teenage girl. Well, normal in the homeschooled, vegan, supermodel beautiful kind of way. When her parents moved to Crescent City, Laurel thought the biggest change in her life was going to be attending public school for the first time in her life. For a while that was true. Until she sprouted a flower from her back. A flower that looked very much like wings.
She chose to tell only David, the boy she had become so close to in school. He was her rock and they were perilously close to becoming much more than friends when she met Tamani.
Tamani was alluring, beautiful, calming and had a way of never really leaving Laurel's thoughts. He was also a faerie - just like Laurel. Laurel couldn't deny how easy it felt to be around Tamani and when she was with him the rest of the world faded away.
Laurel is given the task of keeping her mom's property from being sold and that proves much more difficult than she had imagined. After Laurel's father suddenly becomes deathly ill, Laurel's mom decides there is no other option but to sell the property so Laurel and David set out to investigate the man who is attempting to buy it. This brings them to their own near death experience and soon they learn that faeries aren't the only mythical creatures out there.
Generally, I don't find myself to be a fan of books about faeries and was hesitant to read Wings when I found out it was about them. I must say though, I am very happy that I did decide to read it. Wings gets 4 out of 5 stars and leaves me very excited to read Spells.
