Review: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
The Hunger Games takes place in the post apocalyptic USA. Hunger is rampant. The political system is ruled by the ruthless Capitol and there are 12 districts. Each year 1 male and 1 female teen from each district is randomly chosen to participate in a Gladiator-like televised event to the death where only 1 will win. Watching these events unfold is mandatory. This is a tradition stemming from the rebellion of the 13th district which was obliterated as punishment.
Our heroine, Katniss Everdeen, is a tough cookie who’s had to be the head of her family since her father’s untimely death. Gale is her friend and hunting partner. Or is he? You definitely sense there are some underlying feelings there. Peeta Mallark is the baker’s son. Thing’s get quite interesting at the reaping which is the day the “tributes” from each district are chosen. When Katniss little sisters name is called, well, she cant allow that and immediately acts to replace her. Peeta is the male tribute who is chosen along with Katniss. The tangled love triangle that ensues as the Capitol plays up their “love story” is one you won't want to miss. There’s also plenty of action and gore as the Capitol ensures the tributes face each other and fight to the death.
Wow what an amazing read. It had me riveted from page 1. I could not put the book down. I was literally in tears at the end. My heart breaks for Katniss, Peeta and Gale. Who will she choose? Will the Capitol ever forgive her defiant act of rebellion? Tune in next time kiddies, I’m sure I will finish the next installment, Catching Fire, in the next few days. A definite must read. 4 ½ stars!
